A series of articles exploring teachings from the Good News as reavealed by God in His Word to us.
Pride and religion.
Proud to be.
There are a lot of "proud to be" t-shirts and bumper stickers out there. I would expect this from the secular world. What I find distressing is when someone has a t-shirt or bumper sticker to say that they are proud to be a Presbyterian, Methodist, Evangelical, Catholic, Baptist... fill in the blank. I have actually seen one of these religions used on bumper stickers and tee shirts that say "proud to be ____". I do not find anywhere in the Scriptures where pride is a good thing. And to relate proud of being a certain type of Christian seems almost blasphemous. Why in the world would one who claims to be Christian blatantly say that they are proud when God has so stated so obviously and in so many places that pride is wrong:
Pro 11:2 [When] pride comes, then comes shame: but with the lowly [is] wisdom.
Pro 16:18 Pride [goes] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Pro 29:23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.
Pro 6:16-17 These six [things] does the LORD hate: yea, seven [are] an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, - note that pride is the first mentioned thing that the Lord hates in this list.
Isa 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts [shall be] upon every [one that is] proud and lofty, and upon every [one that is] lifted up; and he shall be brought low:
Jam 4:6 But he gives more grace. Therefore he says, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.
1Jo 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
I am not saying that we should not rejoice in our work or family, but to wear something that says "proud to be _____" is almost akin to saying "look what I have done, aren't I great?". Nothing good comes from this kind of pride and I, personally, would not wear it like a billboard.
